Catherine Voeffray

Catherine Voeffray trained as a designer at the Fashion Design School in Zurich and initially worked freelance. In 1993 she was engaged by the Bern Theatre, where she became deputy head of the costume department in 1997. She designed costumes for numerous theatre and opera productions in Bern and also worked for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the Teatro del Giglio Lucca. In Bern, Catherine Voeffray started her collaboration with choreographer Martin Schläpfer for the Bern Ballet. This was followed by numerous productions for ballettmainz such as Kunst der Fuge, ein Wald, ein See, 3 and Sinfonien as well as for the Ballett am Rhein, of which Nacht umstellt and Ein Deutsches Requiem, which was also in the repertoire of the Vienna State Ballet from 2021, are particularly noteworthy. Catherine Voeffray made her debut at the Vienna State Opera in 2020 with her costume design for Martin Schläpfer’s world premiere 4 - a production that is also available on DVD. This was followed in 2022 by her costume design for Sleeping Beauty. In a team with choreographer Stijn Celis, she has worked with companies such as Les Grands Ballets Canadiens Montréal, Cullberg Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, Cedar Lake Dance Company New York, Ballett der Semperoper Dresden, Aalto Ballett Essen and Ballett des Staatstheaters Saarbrücken. She has worked with Johan Inger at the Opéra de Lyon and the Semperoper Dresden, and with Martin Chaix at the Ballett am Rhein and Ballet du Rhin Strasbourg. For the Ballett am Rhein, she reconstructed Rei Kawakubo’s costumes for Cunningham’s dance piece Scenario, followed by her reconstruction of Karl Lagerfeld’s costumes for the restaging of Uwe Scholz’s ballet Jeunehomme for the Vienna State Ballet in 2024.
