Thomas Diek
Thomas Diek, born in Meerbusch near Düsseldorf, began his professional career with a training as an electrician. In 1991 his interest in the medium of light led him to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. In 1996 he passed his master lighting exam in Munich and was subsequently appointed lighting master. Since 2007 he has been supporting the technical and artistic team of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein as a lighting inspector and light designer. His work on numerous opera and ballet productions by well-known directors and choreographers has led Thomas Diek to guest performances in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Finland and Switzerland. For choreographer Martin Schläpfer, he has designed numerous light designs for the Ballett am Rhein since 2009 and for the Stuttgart Ballet in 2020. At the Vienna State Opera, his light designs for Martin Schläpfer's world premieres of »4« and »The Seasons« followed from the 2020/21 season. For the Ballett am Rhein he has also created the light designs for world premieres by Remus Şucheană, Brigitta Luisa Merki, Ben J. Riepe, Natalia Horecna and the platform choreography »Young Moves«. His collaboration with Natalia Horecna led him to the Grand Théâtre de Genève in 2018 with the premiere of »Return to Nothingness«.
