Der Krieg der Knöpfe (War of the buttons)
A musical theater adventure for the whole family
IN FRANCE 100 YEARS AGO
Two small villages have been at loggerheads for generations, although no one knows exactly why. The children regularly meet in the forest and fight each other. The fact that pants are torn and buttons are cut off in the process provokes the anger of the parents. In order to get away as unscathed as possible, the rascals show all kinds of ingenuity. Gradually, working together seems to become more important than fighting against each other. When it comes to a final confrontation, however, the funny adventure threatens to turn bitterly serious.

The War of the Buttons was a great success as a novel by Louis Pergaud and has been an integral part of French identity since its film adaptation in 1962 at the latest, as well as being a classic of youth literature far beyond French borders.
Johanna Arrouas' production is intended to reflect the attitude to life in a small French village in the countryside 100 years ago. The musical theater adventure also takes the audience on a musical journey to France with well-known chansons. The two youth gangs are played by the young performers of the Volksoper children's choir.
