Richard Chen See
Richard Chen See was a featured performer of Paul Taylor’s Dance Company in New York City from 1993 through 2008 and has been staging the dances of Paul Taylor since 1999 while he was still actively performing, originating and assuming numerous roles from the choreographer’s extensive repertory of works, dating from 1954. He is thrilled to continually introduce dancers and audiences around the world to the breadth of perspective and movement interpretation that helped define modern dance in the USA. Richard Chen See trained in ballet, modern and Afro-Caribbean folk forms in Jamaica and England before embarking on a thirty year performance career. His dance repertoire ranged from classical ballet to experimental modern works, with companies as varied as Northern Ballet Theatre, Oakland Ballet, ODC San Francisco and Paul Taylor Modern Dance. He calls on this breadth of experience in coaching dancers to understand and perform, grounded in the artistic intent of a dance or choreographer. When he is not travelling to stage dances, Richard Chen See resides in New York City where he teaches ballet and modern dance at conservatories for teenagers and pre-professionals. He also runs a seasonal Kayak and Stand Up Paddleboard business on the Hudson River, often working on programmes to get the physically and economically disadvantaged into outdoor activities. In 2018/19 Richard Chen See was a Fulbright-Nehru Grant Recipient at the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) in New Delhi, India for several months. Since December 2021, he has been part of the administrative management of Paul Taylor American Modern Dance as Director of Licensing. Staging Paul Taylors »Promethean Fire« for the premiere in February 2023 at the Volksoper Vienna, Richard Chen See is working for the first time with the Vienna State Ballet.
