The story of Cinderella is well known: A man enters into a new marriage after the death of his wife, and his daughter is given a stepmother. And yet much is different here: the fairy-tale elements are greatly reduced, and instead of the stepmother, father Don Magnifico takes on the evil role in a great social satire that bristles with opera buffa comedy and yet has a happy ending for Cinderella.
A quarter of a century ago, the legendary director Achim Freyer staged La Cenerentola at the Volksoper. His witty, colourful version, bursting with imagination, was an immediate hit with audiences - and is now in our repertoire again.
