During the time of National Socialism, numerous artists were expelled, persecuted, and many were murdered in concentration camps because of their Jewish heritage or political beliefs. Among them were Hermann Leopoldi, Fritz Löhner-Beda, Werner Richard Heymann, Friedrich Hollaender, Bertolt Brecht, and Kurt Weill. In exile, they tried to establish themselves and continue their work in the United States, the United Kingdom, and other countries. However, for most of them, the trauma of persecution and the loss of friends and colleagues was an immeasurable suffering. Their music and texts remain a lasting testament to the destroyed cultural heritage and the human tragedy of that time. Susanne Marik and Béla Fischer bring the music of these artists to the foyer of the Volksoper.
